Basically, it is supposed to prevent automated systems such as those
used by spammers from making use of their systems. However, it
provides the illusion of security rather than real security. Anything
can be cracked, and CAPTCHA systems are just a way for companies to
say: "Well, we're doing anything we can to protect our security."
