Melinda,
You have to use the speech options included with Adobe Reader.
They are in the REad Out loud item in the View menu and seem to be
more restrictive than Preview. You can use Preview by opening the
Applications folder, finding Preview and opening it. Then use the
Open menu to open the PDF document. (BTW, Preview will open other
document types as well)
If you want Preview to act as your default PDF viewer:
1. Find a PDF document.
2. Click on it once to select it.
3. Press Cmd-I to open the information window.
4. Press Ctrl-Opt-I to build an item chooser window.
5. Type Open. This should place you on the string "Open with".
6. Press Enter to move to the "Open with" string in the Information
window.
7. Below this string is a Pop-up button that allows you to select the
application that you want to use to open the file. Select Preview.
7. A little further down the page is a change All button, click it and
answer Yes to the dialog.
All your PDF files should open in Preview by default; but you still
have Adobe Reader to fall back on if it becomes necessary.
