1. Yes. Make sure you're interacting with the text and use VO-A to read a long block of text. Press control to pause or stop the reading. If you pause the reading with the control key, press it again to resume reading.

2. Press VO-M twice to reach the status bar. Use VO-Right to move over to the battery icon, then VO-Down to enter the battery status menu. The battery status and several options for managing power are available here.
