I'm having the same problem but with the mail client that comes on the
mac. I hit command to sellect all and hit the back space to delete
the messages. It seems to delete them for a second but they return.

All right, this is getting strange.
If I open up my imap account in eudora, a bunch of messages that I
deleted under mail are still in the inbox. So the mail is obviously
not syncing properly. The reason mail is caughing is that it is
confused that the state of the mail box isn't what it should be or
something. When I go in, delete the deleted messages under eudora
and log back into my imap with mail, all works well until I delete a
bunch more messages, and then it dies again.

Subject: help, I can't delete messages anymore.
Hi friends, this is the strangest problem ever. I can't use the back
space key to move messages to trash anymore.
I just hit a bunch of letters and erased them with the back space,
but
nothing I do will move messages to trash. I've tried backspace,
delete, comand backspace, edit\moveto\trash, and one or two other
things, but my read mail just sits imobile in my in box. Have I
got a
corupted folder somewhere? I haven't changed anything. This morning
I checked some mail and then I went out on a two hour support call
that ended up lasting all day. When I got home around five, it was
doing this stuff. I've rebooted several times since I got home and
no
change.
I am beginning to think I have some hardware issues. Last week
corupted lck files in my vm, this week a very valuable word document
saved and then refused to re-open, and now this inexplicable
behavior.
