I have found that the create account automatically option works quite well 
and even got my odd ports right.  What it does from what I can tell is try 
some settings till it gets connected.  otherwise, it gives up.

I find that the automatic option usually doesn't work, because it
doesn't take into account authentication and port options.
Furthermore, unless your SMTP and POP settings are real basic, you'll
have to set them manually. I just leave it unchecked and fill out the
info manually, that way, I know that it works properly the first time.
