The "space" and "new line" are spoken extensively in terminal mode. Just
login to terminal and do a vo a to read the screen, all blank lines will be
spoken as "new line". When using lynx to read a text file or html either as
a local file or off the net both "new line " and "space" are spoken where
either appears. "Space" seems to be spoken for the number of space
characters in a blank line and at other times "new line" is spoken for a
blank line..

Because it apparently appears in pdf files also in preview, I 'm even more
convinced it has something to do with the usually unseen and unspoken text
markup characters which vo is speaking as it does any other character. My
guess is it has something to do with how the file was created and if and
when an end of line character is used which produces either the "space" or
"new line" output.
