I think the PC mic stuff is a bit weird. I had the reverse issue where I
just wanted to do a quickie recording through a nice Mackie mixer but
all I had was a PC mic. As it turns out there was no way to make this
work because the PC mic seems to require +5 volts on one of the pins. At
least in the audio world, this is very non-standard. There is something
called Phantom Power for condenser mics but that is 48 volts, not 5.
Maybe it was a PC-specific hack since they run on 5 and 12 volt supplies
inside. I ended up abandoning the PC mic and just borrowed a Sure SM58.

Thanks Doug, that would explain it. Perhaps I will look in to a USB
microphone. Yes, it would have been nice if Apple would have allowed
you to switch between using this port as a line in or as a microphone
port.

The Mac Mini's audio input port is a line-in port, not a microphone
port. This means the levels are way too low for a microphone; the
port is for things like other computer sound card outputs, tape decks,
CD players, etc. You have two choices: Get a USB microphone or
headset, or amplify your mic with something (like a tape deck) and
connect it to the Mini's line-in jack through the amplifier. I admit
I was disappointed when I made this discovery about the Mini myself.

Hi all. I'm wondering if anyone might know what is happening here. I
installed skype, and it works very well with voice over. The problem I
am having is, people cannot hear me, though I can hear them just fine.
I'm using a mac mini, so it doesn't have a built in microphone, so I
connected a headset microphone. The microphone works fine on my PC.
The volume for input is turned up all the way in system preferences,
and speech recognition is disabled. In skype, there is only one option
for selecting the input, the line in port. I know I'm connecting the
right plug to the input. I was just wondering if I missed anything, I
can't think of anything else to try, unless my input port actually has
a problem.
