Do I keep the network settings or start from scratch?

Listers I have a problem in Mail where I can't tab or shift tab
between the messages and mailbox areas. I can VO right and left arrow
to these sections, but tab doesn't work. I have tried two things that
got me to the point where I think I need to reinstall Mail. One is
that when I delete the com.apple.mail.plist file and open Mail I can
tab and shift tab with no problems with the exception that there's no
mail messages or mailboxes. I have also tried this tabbing sequence in
another login on my system and all is well, so I know it's just my
mail account. What I want to do is delete my current mail account or
should I say instance of the Mail app, preserve the mailboxes and
messages while correcting the issue of not being able to tab back and
forth. What advice can any of you offer to accomplish this?
