When I tried this briefly it looked, from my residual vision, that
when I went to a new space and opened an application, it just jumped
back to the space where all the applications were opened.

Hi folks,
I do not think the spaces functionality works quite as advertised.
I was raiding an article which said that if you left the new check
box unchecked in the Spaces preferences, it would not move to the
space with the application, but open that application in the current
space. This would effectively make spaces a task driven feature as
opposed to an application driven feature. Doesn't seem to work
though for me. I.e. Nisus writer will not activate in the space. I
am thinking that I need to close each instances of a window which
just seems to miss the point of the option and the use of spaces
entirely.
Maybe I am wrong or doing something incorrectly though
