Hi Orin,

Another thought, do you never hear the fan come on?  On my laptop I
can hear the fan kick in when the processor loads (and this is more
likely to happen when i hear "Safari, busy", stream a video in the 
browser, load up large PDF files in the inline browser display instead
of downloading them an using Preview, etc).  You might want to make
sure that the fan does turn on some time.  On external hard drives one
of the sources of failure is when the power supply that drives the fans
cuts out.  If they're separately replaced the drives usually stay good.
