Hi David,

Are you running Boot Camp 1.1 or 2.1? According to MacFixIt, Boot Camp
2.1 (in versions for both XP and Vista) is required before installing XP SP3.

Boot Camp 2.1 released: supports Windows XP SP3

Earlier this week we noted that Microsoft Windows XP SP3 may introduce problems
XP installations under Boot Camp. We've received reports of issues with beta
developer builds, including an inability to boot. Apple has preempted these
issues with the release of Boot Camp 2.1, which is required before installing
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). The new release is also available in Windows
Vista 32-bit and 64-bit.

The download link they give for the Boot Camp Update 2.1 for XP (215 MB) is:

http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=18808&cat=1&platform=osx&method=sa/BCUpdateXP.exe

In order to apply these updates, first boot into Boot Camp then download and
run the Windows executables.

David, there seem to be a lot of comments about things to do before applying
the SP3 update, so I'll just ask whether you are running Boot Camp 2.1.
If you aren't/weren't you may not want to immediately download and
install it before checking out some of these additional advisories.

Cheers,

Esther
