the running apps and you go to the finder, there is an unknown you
can interact with to determine the status. Now what is much easier
is make sure Time Machine appears in the menubar and there is a

to the menu where the clock, AirPort status, and the like is located
and you'll find the Time Machine status there as well. It's
automated, you don't select the times at which Time Machine runs.
It's basically intended to be configured for what you want backed up
and then you just let it do it's thing. Does this help at all? If

more detail.
