Hi Keith,
I haven't tried installing or using Open Office, but it seems to me
that you've downloaded the wrong version. You want to get the beta
version that runs in the Mac's (AQUA) environment, not the Unix
port which uses the X11 (graphical imaging) environment. X11 is
built into all Macs, but can't be controlled with VoiceOver
because, although the terminal command are just like the ones we
issue from terminal, the visual graphics-based interface part is
not accessible.
Try going back to the download page and choosing the OpenOffice.org
Aqua version instead of OpenOffice.org X11:
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/index.html
I gather that you only need to move the application file to your
application directory.
Incidentally, there are a number of applications that can work in
both X11 and in the Mac Quartz window environment. TeXShop is one
of these. If you get the wrong interface setup these apps appear
to be inaccessible, although they're not really.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Esther
