Neat! Just tried it and I was able to select the firewire drive on my
laptop as a backup destination from another mac. So now I can just put
the firewire on the other machine all the time to backup everything to it.

with a coaster. Even 1x DVD writing requires no less than 1.35MB per
second. With real world wireless hovering at 2MB per second this is
just asking for problems. Even if it did work, would want to wait 60
minutes to write a single-layer (4.7GB) disk? So it might have been
somewhat possible but they probably didn't want to put in the
engineering work for a marginal use case.
