selecting text in open office?

hey guys
how come when I use the normal selecting commands in open office, it  
doesn't work? I wanna select from part of a line to the end of a  
document, and when I press vo return to stop selecting, it just says  
selecting again like I hadn't turned selecting on but I did, lol. it's  
weird and is making me unintentionally procrastinate my homework, lol.
