You're going to run out of money in theory before you ever need to worry about an iTunes library getting too big. I have 11,000 items in my library right now including movies, music and podcasts. So, its huge, about 60GB or so. Most Mac computers these days come with a large enough drive that you should not have problems. However, you could choose to use an external drive and just need to move the library and point it to the appropriate iTunes library and source file.

The greatest bit of advice I can give you is to stay organized and then have the library backed up. Try to come up with play lists that you know you might like and then update them as you purchase new music. Once you get 10,000 tunes in your library, creating extensive play lists becomes a serious task.

You should really either have an online and or external, off site back- up option at all times. As you spend money on your library your investment grows. I know a lot of people who have a backup of their library on an external drive in the same room or home/office as their computer. That's not smart. You need to have something entirely off site be it an external drive you leave somewhere else or an online solution. You ned something though. Imagine loosing hundreds of dollars in music in addition to other computer file losses.

Dear All,

The rate at which I have been buying/importing music and audiobooks in my Itunes makes me ask the question what happens when I run out of space. I know from what's been said on the list that many of you have extensive music collections and audiobooks and DVD's too. I will probably want to have the latter too. So how can I get ready to deal with it in as simple a way as possible when I reach such a point?

Any tips and suggestions would be appreciated. I guess an obvious thing that occurs to me would be to get a huge terabyte external drive but I need to learn how to run my Itunes successfully and efficiently from such a drive.

With best wishes

Simon
