The short answer is Time Machine will backup your Mac to a drive and
will continue to do so hourly. It will allow you to immediately go and
retrieve something you've deleted and possibly dumped from your trash
and suddenly realize you want it. Also, it's done automatically so you
don't have to think about it. Of course it'll only backup items that
have been changed, are new etc. Copying and so forth is of course
another option available to you, provided you are faithful in doing
this on a regular basis.
