Hi Cara,
Esther, thanks, yes, I'd saved all of the appropriate settings, but
it was just the scrolling table which threw me.
I did see your note after posting mine, but still didn't find the
answer until this one, so a huge thanks yer' way!…
I've only been using Leopard for a few weeks, so I've been surprised
about the (many) instances of in which i've encountered flakely focus
behavior. Sometimes I hear the sounds that announce the boundaries of
the table's scrolling area and sometimes I don't.
Just as a follow-up on my reply, and the earlier linked post about
"Content Transfer to the iPod Nano 4G",
I did an experiment and switched the settings on the options fro the
Summary Page to allow me to manually manage my music and videos. Then
I did a drag and drop of a playlist on the the Nano 4G. (The last 3
podcast episodes in the VoiceOver Getting Started Guide for Leopard,
where I had previously synced the first three podcasts to my Nano).
Sure enough, the files transferred under the manual exchange, but just
as I said, there were no sound clips generated for the Nano 4G menu.
They show up in the Podcasts section of my 4G directory after the
sync'd episodes, they can be viewed in the contents of my Nano under
iTunes (with VoiceOver announcing their properties), and they play
just fine on the 4G --- there just aren't any title information sound
clips for the entries and my wheel goes click, click, click.
So you really don't want to drag and drop playlists onto the Nano 4G
if you want to hear titles spoken. As previously mentioned in the
"Content Transfer to the iPod Nano 4G" post, when you do a manual
transfer with drag and drop to your iPod, the iPod reads the
information about the tracks from the file tags. When you do a sync,
it uses the iTunes database on your computer which generates sound
clips for the tracks you bring over as well as reading the iTunes data
base file on your computer to update it's own data base with
information about the tracks AND include the sound clips.
Cheers,
Esther

Hey All, -just have a couple of quickie questions for ya about
selecting playlists to sync with the nano. In the music tab, I
have my nano set to only sync selected playlists. In the table,
only ten playlists are shown, and I cannot seem to access any
others than those. Unfortunately, none of them are lists I wish
to sync! ick! I've created a playlist specifically for this
purpose, but I can't seem to either manually sync it or have it
show up in that table to check it to have it automatically synced.
How do you have your Options set on the Summary page of your Nano?
If it came up without "Sync only checked songs and videos" checked
or with "Manually manage music and videos" checked you'll have to
change the settings to what you want -- this is probably with the
following options checked:
"Open iTunes when this iPod is connected
"Sync only checked songs and videos"
"Enable spoken menus for accessibility"
(First and last came up checked automatically for me with
VoiceOver turned on)
If you change your configuration, find the "Update" button and
check it
Then go the Music tab. You need to check the box for "Sync Music"
and the Radio button for "Selected playlists" (instead of "All
songs and playlists"). At that point you should be able to find a
list of all the playlists in your iTunes library in the table.
It's a scrolling table, so only about 8 entries get listed on my
MacBook at a time. Usually (but not always) you'll hear the alert
that you've come to the end of the visible table and have to scroll
(VO-shift S) then arrow down 7 or 8 times and escape.
In fact, if your other settings are correctly set up, that might be
the reason you can't get to the playlists you want checked. Simon
posted about this and I added comments about this (yesterday?).
I also tried dragging and dropping it to move it up in my sources
list, as it seems that the ten playlists displayed in the IPod
table for synced playlists are dependent on where they fall in my
sources list. So if I can simply move my created playlist closer
to the top of my sources list, I know it will show up in the
table, as I've seen this happen before.
The other tip I gave in my post is to create a folder for the
playlists that you want to put on your Nano. iTunes orders its
playlists alphabetically, but grouped by: first folders and their
contents, then smart playlists, then regular playlists. If you
create a folder for the playlists that you want to transfer, these
playlists will always appear first in the contextual menu lists for
"Add to play list", and if you ever do a manual transfer with
VoiceOver drag and drop (which you DO NOT WANT TO DO for your Nano
4G), the folder is indeed much closer to the device. (it's also a
good check of mastering drag and drop, since if you can drag and
drop a play list to the folder, you can drag and drop it to an iPod
-- remember to expand the folder with VO-backslash so you can view
the contents). The reason you don't want to manually transfer to
your Nano is that sound tracks for your 4G only get generated when
you sync.

for details.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it to drag and drop! double
ick! lol!
So aside from the rather hacky practice of moving all of my
desired content to a playlist with an unrelated name which already
shows up in my syncing table, does anyone have any suggestions as
to what I can do to access other playlists than the ones already
shown up in the table in the music tab of my nano? Sorry for this
basic question, for what should be so simple, but it's just being
a royal PIMA at the moment! lol!
Anyway, am sooo diggin' on my lil pinky IPod! I've got a bit of
traveling ahead in the next few days, so will have 12 hours in the
air to catch up on some recent TV shows I haven't had time to
check out lately! <smile>
Anyway, hope yer' all havin' a terrific Sunday! Catch y'all
laters!…
Cheers,
Esther
