Hi Cara,
Esther, thanks, I was curious about this myself. <smile> -Hadn't
looked around at the manual yet so glad you posted.
It's a combination of reading the manual and fiddling with the iPod,
but I couldn't find any way to turn Cover Flow Off. (And I should
have corrected my statement that you should turn the "Lock" on by
pushing the switch at the top of the Nano to the right when you are
holding it in a vertical (not horizontal) position -- since it goes
into Cover Flow mode whenever you hold the iPod horizontally.)
In case people who don't have a 4G Nano are wondering why we would
want to turn this feature off,
the iPod speaks whenever it's state changes. So if you're carrying
this around in your pocket, for example, and you've jostled it so that
it's no longer exactly vertical, you hear this menu announcement that
says "Cover Flow" interrupting what's playing. You don't really want
to hear this happen every time your Nano shifts position in your
pocket! Added to which, when the Nano is in Cover Flow mode, the wheel
stops clicking and you're supposed to make your selection from a
visiual image some place that you scroll through and select! It's
kind of fun if you treat it as a kind of Shuffle play mode, but it
grows old quickly.
Anyway, there are numerous comments by 4G Nano users on the web
speculating that Apple will release a software update that will allow
for an option to disable Cover Flow mode.
Incidentally, as you're keeping up with the latest chat RE: the
nano, have you by chance, heard what sdk to use for game dev on the
nano 4G?
The games on the Nano are all visual. One is supposed to be
Solitaire. Another uses the built-in accelerometer that causes
pictures to rotate as you turn your Nano on its side (to the sound of
"Cover Flow") to run a ball in a maze puzzle. I don't know what SDK
they're using -- you could ask the accessibility team to find out for
you.
I've been looking on ADC, but all I can find so far, are vague
references to using the IPhone sdk with various IPods.
Also, if anyone else has any info on this, I'd love love love it!
I've been Googling my brains out here (being TADA! Insomnia Girl!,
the world's most somnolent super heroine!) lol! and still can't
find anything definite. *very annoyed* <smile> -Google and I are
usually very close! <smile>
Hmm, I did a Google search on "4G Nano Games" and hit this Wikipedia
page on iPod Games:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_games
On that page they note:
"Currently Apple has no publicly available SDK for iPod development."
and
"Developers have criticized Apple for not creating a software
development kit (SDK) for software developers to create new iPod
games. This is likely to keep theDRM scheme of iPod games closed."
I didn't know there were so many games being sold for the 4G Nano.
anyway, thanks for indulging my late-night questions / ramblingsā¦
You're welcome.
Smiles,
CQ :)
