I think the technical discussion about how Software Update... works
compared to the Combo updater is beyond the scope of the list, but I
am almost willing to guarantee that applying the combo update will
correct this permissions problem.
There is no risk to applying the combo update on top of 10.5.5.
Again, do not be concerned. This can be corrected now, not in the
next update and this type of error usually indicates a fringe case in
the Software Update package installer. It very well may be that some
percentage of this list would see the same permissions error after
installing 10.5.5.
And finally, ping is slang to contact me, referencing a TCP "ping"
network request. See your utility folder, Network Utility for an
example of the real "ping" protocol.
