I noticed in migrating to leopard one of the big changes what it was no
longer possible just to arrow through radio streams after picking a
category. I have also noticed as of the latest update 5.5, a lot of focus
issues in mail.

Hi Dan,

I know that your problems your problems have been solved, but I seem
to get mail from the MacVisionaries site in odd order, and this is the
latest message I received through mail (AFTER receiving your "Solved"
message). I thought it would be useful to make comments on your
posted issue.

First, it's likely that (until we have other information) that your
iTunes Store problem had nothing to do with the most recent Java
update. Secondly, since you had your cursor tracking off, i think
this issue is also not related to the issue Randy reported -- which I
think I understand -- that affects browsing in the songs table.
Thirdly, thanks for posting a great set of instructions about how to
search for audio books at the iTunes Store <grin>.

I was quite interested in your reply to David that over a long period
of time you have noticed strange intermittent behavior with tracking
options in VoiceOver. I know we've seen changes (and progress over
time) with VoiceOver's focus and tracking behavior. Some of the
changes in link behavior under web pages seem tied to the switch to
Safari 3, and some of those changes also appear to result from the
underlying Webkit engine that Safari (and other browsers) are built
upon. (For example, when you want to download MP3 files from a web
page link, while you have to "control-click" on links to bring up a
context menu in the current version of Safari, you can use VO-Shift-M
in the nightly Webkit builds.
So some of this behavior gets fixed when the engine that Safari and
other browsers use gets updated, and those improvements are in the
works.)

What gets me are the new "glitches" with focus -- not the cases when I
know things can be unstable, as when I'm running close to resource
limits and have been using large, memory intensive functions with
Safari or other apps, but the instances where I can restart a totally
new, completely updated, and largely unfilled machine, experiment with
all tracking modes (and restart the machine in between), and still get
glitchy behavior. For example, I tried checking out mouse keys when
Josh posted his lioncourt tip on how to play sound samples at the
Audible.com web site, and some of the times I that I turned mouse keys
on and off by pressing the option key 5 times I would get messages
like "Zoom cursor off" -- when I didn't even have the zoom cursor on!
(Randy will know what I mean -- these are setting options for other
Universal Access functions. I also then tried out "sticky keys" and
got some "cross-talk" messages with those functions, too.). In iTunes
it really does seem as though sometimes we get quirky focus behavior,
which is why I've been revising instructions for how to navigate --- I
never rely on tabbing to navigate now if I give instructions to other
people, but I ALWAYS used to use this in Tiger because it was faster
and also easier to understand.

Dan, Randy, and everyone else, feel free to chime in with insights.
When I first moved to Leopard I thought I just wasn't used to the new
operating system, but I really think focus has gotten glitchy.

A few comments on the specific topic of searching for audio books:
you don't need to navigate to the songs table if there's a specific
book you're searching for (e.g., a recent release with only one
version as opposed to multiple readings by different narrators of a
classic like "Pride and Prejudice" with both abridged and unabridged
versions). If you select the link for the book in the HTML area,
you'll be taken to an HTML page for that specific book, and there will
be a Preview button that lets you sample the book, and a Buy book
button. There will also be as short description, and there may be
reviews and ratings by other customers. You can also check out other
books that listeners who purchased this book bought. While you can
purchase the book either from the songs list or the HTML area that
result from the original search, you'll get more detailed information
on the book if you navigate in the HTML area to the specific HTML page
for that book.

Cheers,

Esther
