Hi
First, check finder preferences and make sure that "always open
folders in a new window" is unchecked. You can open finder preferences
by presing command-, or choosing preferences from the finder menu.
Also, if you are in list view then pressing command-o will open
folders in new windows.

when I hit command+o. Command+up and or command+down does the same
thing.
