I think the reasoning a lot of folks had for leaving the machines on was more do to the fact hardware like hard drives were less likely to fail if left running. My point is that I've done it both ways and I've noticed no difference. For example, I left several machines running all day and night for years when I was hosting my own domain. All I succeeded in doing is replacing fans more frequently, putting up with the noise, and paying to keep all those machines up. Now that I no longer have my own domain and all Macs, I turn it on in the evening when I come home from work and I've done this with several machines and they all have been just fine. I think turning them on and off within minutes or maybe an hour might start to wear parts out.
