Max, some time back, someone produced an apple script for getting the time instantly. It shows up as an app you name in your apps folder and you just launch it and it announces the time and goes away. There's probably a way to attach a hot key to it too but I don't have the script anymore and don't remember where to find it.

Once you do that, then you can click vo+m twice; and you can then arrow over to the left to hear the time. You then press the escape key, and it takes you right back to where you were. I use this a lot because it lets me get at my battery info as well. And there is a field in there to check that will show am and pm on the menu bar. And you will also see a setting that has your computer speak an the time on the hour, half hour, or quarter hour. Would be nice if there was a ins f12 or something like in jaws, but I don't know of one either.
