I wouldn't say there's a lot of gripe and in all seriousness the way
the nano talks wouldn't suit any hard drive based player including the
classic, since every time it tried to access a speech file it would be
accessing the drive which, on flash players like the nano is no big
deal but on the classic would wear the drive down due to frequent
spinup cycles and drain your battery pretty quick. Unfortunately
there's not enough power in the nano or classic to have true text to
speech.
Personally, I'd find more to gripe about not being able to use the
iPod's clickwheel which I've really come to like, having to charge and
carry around another device that in and of itself is almost as big as
my iPod, and having to have this device hooked into my iPod dock
constantly. For me that kind of takes away the portability factor of
the iPod which is one of its main draws. Plus the $149 price tag in
addition to the $249 price tag on the classic? Ouch. And the classic
would really be the only niche left for this product to fill, since it
wouldn't be very useful on the iPod touch and the new nano's speak
already. I suppose it may work on older Nano models... but what would
the point of that be?
