What I meant by the hotkeys was the use of command up and down arrow, which would change the volume of iTunes itself. That hot key no longer works in iTunes 8. Maybe it changed?

Actually it is "FN" plus the hotkeys outlined above. The old notebooks were "fn" with "f3" being mute and "f4" being Softer and "f5" being louder. Tiger had no fn before these commands.
