I used to be in the same situation as you; I really wanted to try a
mac but I really objected to paying the high price for a used mac
mini.
Then, I found the emac (not imac) that sold much cheaper.
I got my g4 1.42ghz, 512mbram and a 80 gb drive for £70 including shipping.
The emac is basicly the eduicational version of the imac which was
designed for schools. The above spec is the highist that the imacs
whent to, but it now runs leopard fine and so long as you don't get
apple ram, you can do what I did and up the ram to 2gb for around £25.
