Hi Alex and Others,

I think your MacBook has to come with the new keyboard (i.e. be manufactured November 2007 or later) or you need to be using one of the new (as of 2007) Apple Aluminum keyboards in order to use these functions. I assume you're talking about using the media control key functions? That is, with the new keyboards you can have iTunes playing in the background while you're working in another application and use play/pause with Fn-F8, advance forward (Fn-F9) or reverse (Fn- F7) through tracks in a playlist or in the songs outline (or advance/ rewind within individual tracks with Fn-Command-F9 and Fn-Command-F7), mute with Fn-F10, etc. Incidentally, the media control functions work with other media players, not just iTunes -- e.g., DVD player, QuickTime Player, VLC, iPhoto slideshows, etc.

Here's the Apple Document describing the keyboard changes:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3165
(MacBook (Late 2007) and later: New key placement and functionality)

This is the same keyboard layout that was introduced introduced for the MacBook Pro (Early 2008) models, and that is used for the MacBook Air.

There was a firmware update for the earlier MacBook keyboards that was meant to fix a few problems, such as the first key press being ignored if the computer had been sitting idle for a long time.

Cheers,

Esther

Hi,
All,

Can I do what the new keyboards do, by using "f11" and "f12" to control volume and "f8" "f9" and "f7" to control ITunes, and "f10" for mute? I have a mid 2007 Macbook 13 Inch.

Thanks for listening,
Alex,
