rsync is a generic unix file synchronization utility. You can use it to keep two directories in sync with each other. It has some network awareness so you can rsync to another Mac on your network. From Terminal I do something like this:

sync -arv * 192.168.130.5:cblaptopbackup

This copies everything from the current directory (and all its sub directories) to a backup on the remote machine in a folder called cblaptopbackup. I used to do this before I had Time Machine.

ok, so migrate will sync the i tunes library and photos if I choose those options but will leave the contense on the base computer because the way I read it I thought it would erase all content off the base computer. I will try that, so I will then have all the music on my new computer that I have on the older one...correct. and what was r sync and what does it do. thank you so much.

Hi,

To firstly migrate, useMigration assistant that wroksover wireless. Second, you can use RSync to sync them if they are both Macs.

Thanks for listening,

Hello all,

I purchased a new laptop last night, I was wondering what was the best way to copy all my music and my wifes photos to it. I was also wondering if I can setup the notebook to auto sync to the main computer to check for new music everyonce and a while. I dont want to have to hook it up with a wire, can I do this wirelessly. I have music on my computer I got from both cd and I tunes so I want to be able to transfer my entire library to the new laptop.

thanks,

dan
