The only large-sized iPods I've tried more than briefly were introduced before podcasts, music videos, movies, and TV shows became part of the standard repertoire for the iPod. That means the only long content you would use scrubbing mode for was audiobooks, so that's what the scrub action was optimized for. I haven't used the iPod Classic.

Cheers,

Interesting. For me the scrub action on the Nano is scaled way up from my classic. Sometimes I go way too far because I'm expecting it to go as fast as the classic did, and it zips much faster. Also holding the forward and back buttons to scan goes a lot faster than the classic.

Hi Jacob,

Thanks for the feedback. I should have said that the scroll-wheel action in scrubbing is the only physical feature that I'd want to change -- I'd also like to switch off the automatic switch to Cover Flow mode when you tilt the Nano. The only way I can deal with this at present is to lock my Nano after choosing settings so I don't suddenly hear "Cover Flow" every time it tilts. This is far from ideal, but I'm hoping for a software fix since, as you say, this is far from a unique reaction.

It may be that the scroll-wheel scrubbing action can also be changed in a software release, because I feel as though the movement of each of my "scrubs" were scaled down by at least a factor of 3 or 4 -- maybe this is the relative size of the wheel. As far as I can tell, on the 1G and 2G Nanos, one scrub around the scroll wheel was like what you'd experience with one scrub around a larger size iPod. On the 4G Nano, it's as though the action were scaled way down, and scrubbing through a TV show or video (an hour in length) feels close to the way I could scrub through 5 hours of audiobook on a 1G or 2G Nano. It was great for the audiobooks, because you could scroll really fast with the smaller wheel if you wanted to, and was just more adjustable. Of course, those iPods didn't support video, so maybe everything has been reset for TV shows and movies.
