Thanks Ester. I've still got the original post, but the stuff on the
iTell blew right by me at the time cause I wasn't really thinking
about it. I was more worried about getting my music onto the thing
and getting it properly recognized, smiles. There was never any
question about the nano 4g. It isn't even close to enough space for
me, and OI know that I can make the classic work some how some way. I
thought the itell was an apple accessory, so when I took my macbook in
for service last week I asked about it. Some one came out of the back
and told me they could fiddle my classic so it would speak, and I
admit I was dubious. I'd seen the classic with the itell, and I knew
what a fanfair there was about the nanno 4g, so I was surprised not to
have heard an inkling about the classic being able to talk. The lady
seemed very definite about it though. I'm going to go back in when
the store re-opens and make her show me. I suspect she will take a
look at my hardware and say, "Oh no, that's the rong IPod", butto
their credit, the apple support people never seem indecisive or less
than confident, and she definitely said Classic.
Anyway, the plan all along was to buy an ITel. I really only care
about using the ipod, not whether the voice is ergonomic or whether I
like the look of the control surface. I didn't mean to get
sidetracked on the issue of making the classic speak on it's own.
Thanks again, and appologies for missing it on the first run.

Hi Erik,
I gave you the link to the podcast demo for the i-Tel in my reply to
your post on restoring your Classic earlier this week. There was
also some earlier discussion on the list that you can bring up if
you search the archives. I'll paste in part of the relevant text
from my earlier post:
There's a podcast on the Cobolt Systems i-Tel that you can get at:
feed://feeds.feedburner.com/tandt
Brian Hartgen also made a podcast on the iPod Nano 4G, so you can
compare the two. Use this as a guide for what parts of the iPod menu
are supported and what the voices and interfaces sound like for i-
Tel vs. Nano 4G, rather than for detailed instructions, since these
podcasts are aimed primarily at people who use the J-Tunes scripts
and JAWS. There is some discussion of performance under WE. Also,
maybe Tim and others who have direct experience with the i-Tel can
tell you more about it.

Hey Eric,
The iTell isn't manufactured or sold by Apple. the company you're
looking for is Cobolt Systems I think. I'd strongly suggest you
listen to a demo of the product though if you haven't already done so
before you part up with any cash - there's one on the blog at

Hi guys, I'm not seeing the ITell controller under ipod cables and
docks in accessories. Am I looking in the rong place, or is that
componant not sold by apple, or did they maybe discontinue it?
