Dan, did you first switch to the spellchecker window? I have had to do
this and so far it's worked fine.

Hello everyone,
See what you think about this.
I just corresponded to a message on this list. It had the word
"Splasm" a company name.
When I used spellcheck, it wanted to put in Splash. None of the
buttons worked. I couldn't use the Learn button or the Next button.
However, I then launched TextEdit and put in the word "Splasm" and
activated the spellchecker. When I came across Splasm, I used the
learn button.
Then I went back to Mail and created a draft message with the word
"Splasm" in it. Then I used the spellchecker and everything worked
just fine. It then saw "Splasm" as a properly spelled word.
The problems are when correcting in Mail, i think.
If others have any problems like this, I'll email Apple's
Accessibility and let them know. However, I don't think this is a
VoiceOver problem. I suspect it's related to how the spellchecker
works in Mail.
