Hi,
Wow, thanks for the heads up on the Nano update and the ability to
turn off Coverflow! I never answered your post or Cara's about
occasionally having the 4G Nano miss speaking an Artist or other
entry, or associating this with the wrong file since I've mostly seen
this, but I think it's an issue of how the iPod recognizes "new"
information. That's why I was interested about Chris' post and
Jacob's comments that you could get the spoken entries with drag and
drop, since this is one potential source of information about what
forces updates. (I would have guessed that the sync on connect and
the drag and drop content could potentially give conflicting
information about what is new and current content.) You probably
don't have to do a restore to get this information back -- some
forcing of a resync with new additions (update, then sync) can
probably take care of things. I notice, for example, that I can't
edit a smart playlist and simply change one of the rule conditions and
have the new condition "take" on the Nano.
If anyone wants to play with the iPod Nano content menus, use a
maintenance utility like OnyX or iTool to turn off hidden files and
examine the Nano under Finder. There are folder that contain both the
music and the sound snippets that will play when you QuickLook them
(with space bar). They all have esoteric names and a prefix letter
that indicates whether these are system or user-specific sound
snippets, so the internal database must tie the names/addresses to the
song and podcast entries.
Cheers,
Esther
