Esther, nevermind about the app not having anything on the screen. For some reason it was attemtping to connect to the interenet and was taking an incredibly long time. Eventually it gave up so I need to figure out what the issue is, but once it was loaded, it worked fine and honestly it's quite accessible and a very neat idea. I suspect in the coming years, this will really take off and it'll be sort of like what the NLS service is now. I mean it sort of reminds me of the Daisy format as far as the capabilities. Well hey it is nice to see other options are available.
With OverDrive there are likely to be at least 2 different windows that you may be working with: 1. OverDrive Media Console - main console where you select your books, and access buttons to Play (in OverDrive Media Explorer), Transfer (to iPod), Burn (to CD if permitted), Download, Delete, and get Information (about file location, expiration date, playing times, and permitted uses) for your downloads. 2. OverDrive Media Explorer - player console for selected audiobook; controls for playback options: volume, speed, navigation through book, bookmarks.
If you were waiting on an internet connection, it could have been either to OverDrive or your library. I think there are some preference settings to check for updates and check for messages at first launch. (You can probably turn these off). I think: a) OverDrive may take their main site down for periods to update information and content and b) you may have hit a lot of people trying the new download feature on the Mac, all of whom were making the connection with the check for updates feature automatically turned on -- sort of like the busy signals from the iTunes Store just after a new feature gets added.
The other place where you can end up waiting is if you opted to download all parts of your book at once. Since I wanted to get this playing and up as soon as possible, I just checked boxes for the first few parts to download. You can always get any remaining parts at a later time by using the "Downloads" button on the Console.
Cheers, Esther
