I should probably add, if I want to type bulleted items in general, without having to resort to a list environment or TextEdit, I do it the way that Tim Kilburn does by just pressing Option+8:

• Here's a first bulleted item
• And here's another
• Just hold down the "Option" and "8" keys simultaneously to generate a bullet symbol
• You can even put your bullets (•) in the middle of a line

For any list readers who are interested, you can type special characters, symbols, and accent marks by holding down the option key along with other characters. Try out combinations in TextEdit. For example, you can generate the Apple symbol by pressing down the Option, Shift, and K keys. This was the subject of discussion back in March for people who wanted to type accents. You can either handle this by changing to the input keyboard for a language that regularly uses these accents (e.g. Spanish, French, German, etc.) and find the accents on the regular keyboard (with some letters and accents in possibly different places from a U.S. keyboard), or you can extend the U.S./U.K./Canadian/Australian etc. keyboard combinations by holding down the Option key with other keys to generate these symbols.

HTH.

Hi David,

This is actually in the TextEdit help. Type in your list, select all items in the list, then apply the lists selection option (bullets, numbers, etc.) from the popup button on the ruler. Here are the instructions pasted from the help:

To create a list:
Type your list, pressing Return at the end of each list item.
Select the list, then choose a bullet or number from the Lists pop- up menu. To customize a bullet or number, choose Other.

Hello all,

What is the science behind creating lists in text edit? I've looked at the dialog and picked my bulet, but it only appears on the first item.

Thanks!
