Jacob, Mac the Ripper can strip the region codes from a DVD though. So would you not be able to rip / reburn the material to a blank DVD and then play it?…

Now, mind you, I'm not suggesting this, but I am wondering if this is correct?…

DVDs are region protected, as well as having a pal video signal instead of an NTSC signal (this was the issue with VHS regions). Unless you have a region-free player, DVDs you purchased from the UK will not play in a US DVD player or drive. See

for more detail.
There is currently no way to make any of the DVD drives in Intel Macs be region-free, as they have a hardware region protection, and it is not possible to flash their firmware to remove it. You can change this region up to five times, but then it will be locked forever. You will either need an external, region-free DVD drive or to replace the internal drive with one that can be made region-free. As the RPC is completely in the firmware of the drive, rather than in the PC software, even programs such as VLC or MacTheRipper cannot get around it as they usually can.

Dear Max,

No, I'm afraid I did not search the American site. Give it a go though. As forp urchasing, you should be able to buy from the British site but I'm not sure about extra costs. I'm not familiar with various dvd systems either. I know there was a difference between American and British system in VCR but I have no idea about dvd's. Sorry can't be more helpful.

Best wishes

Hi Simon; Did you happen to do a similar search for the u s version of amazon? Any idea if they would let us yanks buy from there, and would we be able to play them here if we did? Thanks for the work, Max

In case people do not know, on amazon.co.uk website, under the dvd section, there is a separate section listing all the avilable dvd's with audio description - over 300 of them.

I found it difficult to locate that section so I executed a search where in the search box I put "audio description dvd", and I was taken to those pages. I hate buying on amazon - the site being so big and cluttered - but I congratulate them on creating a special section of audio described dvd's.

With best wishes to all, Simon

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.
