ipod woes!

I got an Ipod 4g for my birthday.  I can't seem to make it talk, or  
sync, or basically anything.  At one point it said that it was  
displaying in Japanese, but then I reset it and now nothing.  I  
checked the little box under devices and summary to activate speech  
but still no go and I don't think there is music on there even though  
I hit the sync button.  I know this has been probably been talked to  
death on the list, but if anyone would either be willing to write  
privately or respond via messenger/s my contact info is in my signature.
