Don't you have to compile and build it yourself for the open source edition?

If you just downloaded it from www.virtualbox.org, you most likely have the non-open source edition--the one that has USB. It would have said "virtualbox open source edition" if you had downloaded that one. To connect a USB device under Virtualbox, plug the device in. Navigate to the Devices menu while the VM is running, then to the USB menu, and check the device you wish to connect. USB devices do not auto-connect if the VM has focus, in contrast to VMWare Fusion which does automatically connect the devices. If you do not have a USB submenu, then you have the open source edition. I think the about dialog will say "virtualbox open source edition" or "Virtualbox OSE" as well, but I'm not sure of that for certain as that isn't the edition I use. I need USB support in my VMs.

Hi
The open source edition of Virtualbox does not have USB, for whatever reason the USB code is still closed. However, the closed source edition is still free for personal use, and you can use USB on that. I believe the USB code is still closed because SUN doesn't have full rights to that section of the Virtualbox codebase as of yet.

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.
