There is one network where I need to use a static IP. Perhaps I can write a
script to detect the network and set the IP accordingly.

You aren't using DHCP? Sharing is turned on based on user preferences so
if you're logged in as the same user in multiple locations then you will
need to manually turn sharing on and off.
