I have *no* Microsoft software on this workstation at all apart from
Windows, as a way of keeping the workstation stable (and it's been ok).
I've just run "Windows Update" on my Windows XP SP1 workstation here. It
identified a 1KB "Security fix" that needed to be installed on this
workstation with a title along the lines of "Security fix for MSN
Messenger".
Now, in keeping with the policy of "NO Microsoft software" on this
workstation, I don't have MSN Messenger on it. However dumb this was in
hindsight, I figured there must be some dll or other library from it on
the system that needed updating, so I allowed that to continue.
Long story short, after the "Windows Update" completed, I now have a
full version of MSN "Explorer" installed on my workstation (that's a bit
bigger than the 1KB download they said!), it adds itself to the windows
registry startup area in the process so it's always on (Spybot Search
and Destroy stopped asked me if I wanted that stopped fortunately), and
there is no mention of it in Add/Remove programs, so technically it's
not a removable package.
Hows _that_ for sleazy, arse-ways tactics from Microsoft? Anyone got
connections to the EU/EC people about that "monopolist" case being pursued?
(Yes, I'm really pissed off)
