I don't speak for Ximian;) I doubt they have any more love for non-native packaging than other Linux distributions (arguments are usually about which native package system is the best one, not about the use of a single packaging method per distro)

I would strongly suggest finding out how they feel about this. If Ximian's view is as important as you suggest, then you probably want to find out what it is and report back. :-)
