this is indeed currently not possible (among a few other things, e.g. you also cannot interrupt a running effect by clicking with the mouse or pressing space, as for PPT). But that's planned for 2.0.1. I've just filed issue 48179 for that, issue 45197 is for the interruption feature. You might consider detailing the desired behaviour in those issues, it's always helpful to have a power user's perspective on that.
