I think Writer is easily as good as, and probably better than, Word for
most users. Ditto for Impress (in 2.0), and Draw has no equal in MSO.
But Excel is likely the finest piece of software in MS's stable, and a
damn high target for Calc.

Calc is still good enough for the vast majority of Excel users. I have found "OK you want Excel? You pay for it", reasonably effective on moaning dissidents ;-)

I actually find calc to be more in target with excel when the gap widens is on Impress. Basically the lack of animation mature functionality makes Impress fall behind the PowerPoint 'power user'.

Things like embedded video, flash animations, sound management and functionality
is either hard to figure out or not existent yet.
