What exactly are you talking about? Backup files are not overwriting your original file, they always create a copy in your "backup" directory. Autosave overwrites your original file only in OOo1.x, but not in OOo2.0 anymore. In the new version we always create temporary copies in the backup folder. Maybe OOo2.0 does exactly what you want? At least the intention we followed with the new "AutoSave" feature was exactly as you pointed out: never overwrite the users original file without being asked to do so.
