I recommend you read the excellent styles chapter of the user guide,
written by your humble servant :)

Styles is one of the crucial features that sets OOo apart from other
office suites. Styles are central to OOo's understanding of a document,
and in them lie many of OOo's features (templates, master documents,
navigator, etc).
This chapter starts from zero knowledge of styles and takes you to a
reasonable understanding of what they are and what they can do. And
gives you a solid background if you decide to study more later. :)
