Well, thanks for the suggestion, but it was to no avail. Alas, I may have to resort to some more stringent rescue method, i.e.; maybe reinstall. But seriously, something has happened to the X configuration that only allows root to login, so, I think it is just permissions. Any new user I creat cannot loging to an X session. But, which files are affected, I don't know.
