Hello,
We have been investigating Open Office and have two questions:
1. Will Open Office save a .pdf file and/or does it work in conjunction
with Adobe Acrobat as does Microsoft Word?
Yes. Since version 1.1 you can export documents to PDF. In version 2.0
(due soon, Beta available today) this facility has been greatly improved.
2. Microsoft Office Xcel has a function in the "Tools" section that is
called "Solver" that allows and creates various fitting parameters. Does
"Calc" of Open Office have a similar feature?
OpenOffice.org (OOo) does not contain a solver. But work has been done
on this by the community.
For example a linear solver is available as an installable component.
See <http://solver.linuxml.com/>. IIRC license problems prevent
integrating this into OOo proper.
There also is ongoing work under the 'Google Summer Of Code' project to
create a solver than can be made part of OOo. See
<http://kohei.us/ooo/solver/summer.html>.
