I am a scientist too. The larger poster area I have seen is a "A-1" or double A0: Two A0 pages glued together by the long side. (The long side of an A0 paper is 118 cm long). So this double A0 is 170x118 cm. I would suggest you to use "scale-up". Just use as paper an A1 sheet. Make all dimensions half of final desired lenght (and font size). Print to PDF or PS file. And when going to printer, ask printers to scale by 200% the final size. I have used this techique even between A4 and A0 (4x magnification): advantages of vector graphics.
