Sorry, I looked at the complete usage and didn't separate the causes..
The password restriction is in cosmopod as I understand it. Do they
want it to be easy for the government to enter their users accounts?
The maximum allowed length of the password is more relevant. Assume both
upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols -- say, 84 characters
to choose from. A ten character password has then 84^10 possibilities.
Limiting it to lower case letters and numbers you have 36 possible
characters.
84^10 = 36^x
10 log(84) = x log(36)
solving for x gives you 12.36. So a 13 character password out of 36
possible characters is more secure against brute force than a 10
character password out of 84 possible characters.
Besides which, most people choose stupid passwords anyway. ;)
And the problems too connect to cosmopod makes it dubious to recommend
more users at the moment I suppose.
Also makes it much harder to break in. Password cracking programs rely
on an ability to try thousands of passwords a second. Slow that down to
one every few seconds at best and the time required... well, have you
heard of the idea of the heat death of the universe? :)
