To All: The simplest cure is to use either Mozilla or Firefox and avoid
Internet Explorer entirely!!

There is apparently a security feature in Windows XP Pro SP2 that
causes Internet Explorer to examine the contents of a file you ask it
to open, and make a judgement based on the file's contents rather
than on its file type.
Thus when you click on myfile.odt on a website, IE will download it
as myfile.ZIP.
Has anyone found a way to reconfigure either IE or Windows to permit
ODT files to be downloaded as ODT?
Thanks.
I'm running WinXP Pro SP2. I don't normally use IE but I fired it up
to test this, and I do not see this behaviour. When I download a .odt
file using IE6, it comes down with the correct extension. I vaguely
recall doing something to disable some of the annoying security
settings but I can't remember what it might have been. It's possible
it's something in the Windows firewall which I disabled completely and
replaced with ZoneAlarm.
Sorry, that's not a lot of help but may give some clues.
